Camera Obscura:
- Latin for “dark room”
- an optical device that led to photography
- device consists of a box or room with a hole in one side
- Light from an external scene passes through the hole and strikes a surface inside where it is reproduced
The Calotype:
- Introduced in 1841 by Willian Henry Fox Talbot
- The term calotype comes from the Greek “kalos” meaning beautiful and “tupos” meaning impression
- This photographic process uses paper coated with silver iodide
The Daguerreotype:
- The first publicly announced photographic process
- Invented by Louis-Jaques-Mande-Daguerre
- Images from a Daguerreotype do not sit on the surface of the metal, but appear to be floating in space
Dry Plate Process:
- Also known as gelatin process
- invented by Dr. Richard L. Maddox in 1871
- Was a simplified process of photography
The Brownie:
- The first Brownie, introduced in February 1900 by Eastman Kodak
- Introduced the concept of the snapshot
- Very basic cardboard box camera with a simple lens
- took 2¼ inch square pictures on 117 roll film
